Just when i got back from London i attended Poul Stigs event at their shop in central Copenhagen. They celebrated the cult eyewear designer Garrett Leight with beers, hotdogs and the new collection. I was lucky to meet Garrett back in january when i was with Poul Stig at the Opti Munich eyewear fair in Munich. On wednesday we had time to have a proper talk about internet, inspiration and how to look cool in glasses:
F: How do you design something that people have to wear everyday and in many different situations?
G: We focus on good styles with the right measurements and a good fit, and then we go from there. The fit is so important. We have many classics that we evolve into different looks. But Garrett Leight glasses is not neccessarily for everyone, but everyone can wear them if they want to.
F: How do you find inspiration and how do you apply it to your design?
The internet. I look at pinterest and old pictures of artists and musicians. We take inspiration from vintage eyewear that we buy on ebay, and then we see how the frames are constructed and if it could go well with our design. The internet is just great for inspiration. You can find everything.
F: How much do you love the internet?
G: I think only 1... Instagram is getting too much and too perfect. Give me something that's off and a bit odd. Everything is so polished.
F: Even doing these low key 'i don't care' instagrams, that's a thing, that people do..?
G: True. It's hard to be real on instagram. But besides instagram the internet is pretty great. Maybe i'll change it to 12.
F: Why do Asian guys look so cool in glasses?
G: I don't know, but they do look really cool.
F: What is the trick to avoid fogged glasses when you walk into a restaurant?
G: Live in LA, it never happens here.
